So naturally, we want to protect them. Keeping your four-legged friend safe and healthy means providing them with a loving home, good food, plenty of water, and lots of exercise. But no matter how much we care for our pets, they can still end up lost from time to time, and when that happens you want to have a fail-safe method for bringing them home as fast as possible.

There are a few ways to ensure a quick reunion with your best buddy, but the oldest and best is the use of dog tags. Securing a personalized ID to the collar of your pet is still the most reliable form of bringing your dog home should they get out and run away. Another effective and very popular method is microchipping, but while this is a much more technologically-advanced option it still has some disadvantages. A stranger or passerby who sees your dog may not realize the animal is missing and could dismiss it as a stray.

Dog tags are a quick and dependable indicator to others that the dog roaming loose on the streets has wandered away from home. A big challenge here is fitting all of the most important information inside a limited amount of space. Dog tags are small for a reason, since they need to go around your pet's neck without hindering movement, causing injury, or annoying your pup to the point of an attempted removal through chewing, biting, or scratching at the tag.

So you have a small amount of surface space and a lot of information that you need to include. Here are some of the things you should consider adding to the tag:

The Name of Your Pet

This one is rather obvious, especially if your dog responds to his or her name. It's also a sure-fire way for someone to know this is the lost dog that you are looking to bring home.

Phone Number

Make it the number that is most likely to be answered should a stranger call to let you know they've seen your dog, or have them at their house. You could also include an alternate number to ensure that whoever calls about your pup will get in contact with you.

Medical Issues

If your dog has any urgent medical care requirements it's a very good idea to include these on the tag as well. This way, anyone who finds your pet knows to contact you ASAP, and if your pooch is in dire need of attention, your pet can easily be brought to a vet or medical professional to administer aid.

Address

Some people may be a little wary of putting their full address on the dog tags of their pet. If this is you, just include the city in which you live to expedite a reunion.

Microchip Information

If your pet has a microchip, it's a good idea to include this on your dog tags. That way an effort can be made to reunite you and your pet in the event the finders are having trouble reaching you via phone.

Additional Information

If space allows, you might want to add a personal touch to the tag. Something that lets people know that if they see your pet without you by its side, it may be lost. Some owners will also indicate that a reward is being offered for the safe return of their pet. If you have the financial capability to do so, consider including a reward on your dog tags.

Is an Engraved Pet ID Tag Best?

The answer to this is a resounding yes! Choosing an engraved pet ID is the best way to ensure that the information on your dog’s tag remains legible.

Engraved dog tags are also your best bet for ensuring that your pet is returned quickly and safely because it allows for the information to be properly etched into the surface to maintain legibility. The wrong time to discover that it's hard to read your dog tags is when your pet has disappeared.

Choosing a tag that utilizes other materials such as pen and paper inside of a leather or plastic tag presents a wide array of potential problems. These dog tags are more susceptible to damage due to weather, rough-housing with other dogs, or your own pup turning its attention towards playing with the tag or yanking it off entirely.

You don't have to worry about these issues with an engraved pet ID. The information is printed into the surface of the tag and you won't have to worry about it getting wiped away for any reason. If you have an energetic pooch, there is a chance that your dog tags could become scratched or worn down after an extended period of time. So consider having a second set on hand, just in case the first sustains some damage or the tag is lost for whatever reason. By nature, dogs are curious, rambunctious, and willful. If they see something they want (especially something they can chase after) you can bet their first instinct is to bolt without any warning. Whether it's at the dog park, on a sidewalk stroll, or even in your own home or yard, if your dog sees something that grabs their attention, they’ll want to pursue it.

This is one of the major reasons so many dogs go missing each year. A pet gets out and runs away, and after wandering around the animal is no longer able to find its way back home. This puts the health and well-being of your dog at risk. But when your pet is wearing a set of dog tags, you increase the odds of your pet being return back home unharmed.

Some pet owners will microchip their dogs for this same purpose. There's no denying that microchipping has brought home many beloved pets who have embarked on an impromptu adventure. However, you're dealing with additional steps required for determining where Fido belongs and how to get him there. A microchip only works if the individual who finds your dog brings him or her to a pet clinic or animal shelter.

That might actually reduce the chances of your pet being found successfully because a lot of people just aren't going to have the time or the desire to catch your pet, load him or her up into the car, find the nearest clinic or shelter, drive over there, and bring them in.

On the other hand, an easy to read tag around your pet's neck is a quick solution towards bringing your lost dog back home. The person who finds your pet only has to call the number on the tag and tell you they have found your dog and where he or she is located. No need for extra steps since the pet ID tag has provided all your contact information at a glance, making it easy for whoever has found your dog to reach you. Before you know it, you and your dog will be reunited.

A set of dog tags might also make passersby more likely to come near your pet and try to engage with the animal to read the pet tags that are attached. So you're going to want to keep it to the basics. The following are the most important essential data you want to be sure to include on your pet ID tag:
Pet Name
It goes without saying that you want to have the name of your dog or cat on the tag. How else would you expect a stranger to call to your pet when he or she locates the pet? If your pet comes when called, then even more reason to have their proper name visible on their pet ID tag.
Phone Number
This will be the primary method of contact. List whatever number is going to be answered the quickest should you be in a position where you are waiting and hoping for someone to call you with information about your pet's whereabouts.
Special Needs
The biggest challenge for many lost pets with special needs is the lack of medical attention they receive while they are missing. Just one missed dose of medication or a chronic condition left untreated can severely impact your pet's health. But when your pet ID tag lists any urgent medical needs, a Good Samaritan can be made aware of the issue and bring your pet to a veterinarian for care.
Address
Some pet owners will simply list the city in which they live to help their lost pet come home. If your pet has a microchip, this should suffice as your complete information should be registered with the microchip database. Be sure to mention that your pet does have a microchip on the dog ID tag as well."
}
},{
"@type": "Question",
"name": "What is the Best Dog Tag?",
"acceptedAnswer": {
"@type": "Answer",
"text": "There is no one-size-fits-all parameter as to the “best” dog ID tag. The best pet id tag is the one that works for you and your pet. That means finding a id tag that does what it's supposed to do without fail. But with so many pet tags on the market, you might have a little trouble finding the right one.
So to answer this question, the best dog ID tag is the one that is made from the right material, comes in a size that works for your pet, and offers a level of reliability that ensures your pet ID tag will be legible and informative if your pet becomes lost.
In order to find the pet ID tag that works best you need to first decide on the physical attributes of the tag that fit your pet's temperament and lifestyle best.
Engraved Pet ID Tags
First and foremost, may we suggest you go with a tag that can have all of your information engraved into the surface. Engraving on a pet ID tag ensures that all of the important data remains intact and easy to read. You don't want to use ink because it can be washed away in rainy weather. With an engraved pet id tag, your contact information is always clear and easy to read.
Pet ID Tag Materials
Now that we've covered the importance of engraving, it's time to decide what material you are going to have your information etched upon. There is a range of common materials that are used in creating a dog ID tag, each with their own set of advantages and drawbacks. Here are some of the most popular:
Brass Dog Tags
Brass is our top choice for pet id tags because of its durability. It’s why all Two Tails dog tags are made of this material. Brass dog tags will withstand all the roughhousing and playtimes your puppy can throw at it. While brass tags usually come in a limited variety of colors and shapes, at Two Tails we carry a wide variety of unique (and super cute!) brass dog tags.
Stainless Steel ID Tags
This is the best option for pet owners with highly active pets who are very hard on their belongings. Choosing a stainless steel tag is good for those pets that break and destroy without much effort. This dog tag can take the abuse.
Aluminum Dog Tags
What makes this material so popular with pet owners is the versatility and weight. You can find a wider range of dog tag shapes in aluminum and the lightweight nature of the metal is ideal for pets of all sizes.
Plastic Pet Tags
Many pet owners will turn to plastic because it too is lightweight and able to withstand abuse from active pups. The engraving on plastic tags is also dependable as it doesn't begin to fade and wear off as quickly as some materials. Plastic pet ID tags are also easy to read, but unlike steel or aluminum, they are easier to crack or break."
}
},{
"@type": "Question",
"name": "Do Dog Tags Bother Dogs?",
"acceptedAnswer": {
"@type": "Answer",
"text": "One might wonder whether or not wearing a dog ID tag is bothersome for dogs. Not all pups enjoy the feeling of a collar around the neck and having that piece of plastic or metal hanging under the chin might be even more annoying. That's why pet ID tags are created in small sizes. Dog tags are supposed to maintain a low profile, without interfering in your pet's everyday activities.
Besides the physical presence of the pet ID tags on the collar, the sound tags can make when the dog or cat is moving around can be irritating. Believe it or not, the jingle jangle of the tags from even low-impact activities can actually cause more harm to the ears than anything else. The noise has been shown to be bothersome to some pets and it could lead to your pet chewing or scratching at the tag to remove it. That’s why it’s best to have 1 dependable tag attached to your dog collar."
}
},{
"@type": "Question",
"name": "Do Dogs and Cats Need an ID Tag?",
"acceptedAnswer": {
"@type": "Answer",
"text": "Every pet, dogs and cats alike, should have a pet ID tag on its dog collar. This is especially important for cats, regardless of whether or not you let them outdoors. Even an indoor cat should be wearing a pet ID tag because cats can dart out of an open door or window without you realizing it. If your kitty isn't microchipped you're going to play a long waiting game, hoping the cat returns home for food. Sometimes that doesn't happen and the cat is lost somewhere in your neighborhood.
With a pet ID tag, a neighbor might see the cat and have the ability to contact you with its whereabouts. The same goes for dogs. Your leash may seem like a safe method for protecting your pup when you're out and about, but leashes can be dropped by mistake, or the leash could snap at the wrong time, and as a result, the dog runs off. Pretty soon, the dog is lost and you're driving around the neighborhood on the lookout. That is not the time to be wondering if you should have attached a dog ID tag.
The only time when you should NOT have a collar and pet ID tag on your dog or cat is inside of a kennel. A collar can get caught and that could pose a major choking hazard to your pet. Cats, in particular, should always be outfitted with a breakaway collar so if it does get stuck inside a kennel door or on a tree branch, the collar will come loose if yanked."
}
},{
"@type": "Question",
"name": "How Do I Attach a Pet ID Tag to a Collar?",
"acceptedAnswer": {
"@type": "Answer",
"text": "Although it may seem like a simple, even trivial, matter as to how you should attach your pet ID tag to their collar, you may be surprised to discover that certain methods work far better than others.
S-Hook Tags
These have been in use for pet id tags for about as far back as we can remember, however, they do pose some potential problems. First and foremost, an S-hook needs to be secured with pliers to ensure that neither side of the S comes loose. You don't want to have your pet running around with a tag that falls off from the end of an S-hook that hasn't been pinched shut properly.
There are other dangers as well, as some dogs have been injured from S-hooks that haven't been pinched shut completely. If you think about it, the end of an S-hook is a sharp point that really shouldn't be near your pet's face. S-hooks need to be routinely monitored and re-pinched to ensure that a pet ID tag doesn't come loose or pose a threat to your pet.
Split Ring Pet ID Tags
The better alternative is the split ring. It's a much smaller version of the ring on which you keep your house and car keys. Since it's a closed ring, the possibility for the pet ID tag to come loose from the collar is greatly reduced. There is the potential for the ring on the tag to get caught in the spiral of the ring and slowly make its way around as your pet runs and plays. But the likelihood of this happening is minimal. Check periodically to make sure the dog tag is not stuck in the split ring in order to keep the pet id tag from falling off."
}
},{
"@type": "Question",
"name": "Pet ID Tag Advice",
"acceptedAnswer": {
"@type": "Answer",
"text": "Now that you've learned more about pet ID tags, you can make the right choice from an informed point of view. It helps to get people focused on bringing the dog home and knowing they have the right dog in question.

How Do You Make Dog Tags Not Jingle?

It's a common problem that many pet owners and even their dogs find rather annoying. Dog tags jingle jangle from even the slightest movement of your pet, whether they're standing up, running, even scratching an itch – those tags can really start to clang about.

One of the quick fix alternatives to jingling dog tags is to simply remove them. But while this may seem like an easy and harmless choice, you never know when your dog is going to get lost. Step outside for two seconds to get the mail or water a plant and before you even realize it, your dog has slipped out and is running loose. In seconds, your dog can leave the property and in minutes, your dog is officially lost.

Unfortunately, you removed his or her tags thinking the dog was home for the night and not going outside. Now your dog is running loose outdoors with absolutely no means of identification or method for contacting you should he or she be located.

There are options without having to remove the tags. Here are a few ways to mute the noise of dangling, jangling dog ID tags.

Rubber Band or Tape

Take both tags, rubber band or Scotch tape, and use them to connect them together so they aren't jingling but you know they can always be noticed and read should your pup get out of your home. Just be careful you don't have a worn out rubber band that can snap off. And ensure that you have the tags secured in a way that prevents them from rubbing against one another, which could wear away the engraving.

Tag Covers

Do you know what those rubber covers look like for your house-keys? Well some companies have developed a similar rubber cover for dog tags. Slip these on and that will severely mute the jingle-jangle that's driving everyone crazy. If you can't find a dedicated dog tag cover for sale, you may just want to try those key covers. They may be just as effective.

Tag Pouch

Dog tags are connected to the dog collar with a snap, an S-hook, or some other connecting device. But those pet tags just won't stop being so loud. So place the tags in a dog collar tag pouch and connect the pouch directly to the collar. This alternative allows for the tags to be read on the dog should he or she go missing, but they are contained in a pouch where they can be read and replaced.
