Are you having trouble deciding on a name for your new girl dog? Don't worry; we're here to help!

We've already done all the research for you and have come up with a huge list of the best girl dog names!

We've broken down girl dog names by themes like most popular, unique, cute, pop culture, food, and more! We also have the perfect dog id tags to go with any name.

As Beverly Cuddy of Dogs Today Magazine humorously pointed out to us, "Back in the olden days dogs had their own names - Spot, Fido, Rex, etc. But, as they've moved out of the kennel and onto our sofas, traditionally human names have taken over. The top 10 baby and dog names are pretty much the same. Therefore be aware if you have dogs before you have kids you may have already used up all your best names!"

Before you decide on a name, spend a little time getting to know your new puppy. You want to come up with a name that delights you, but also fits their personality. Beverly shared her own experience, "Controversially, I named one of my dogs after my lovely and much missed Mum. Betty is such a lovely name and If I'd had a daughter I would have carried on the name that way. Mum loved dogs too, so I am sure she'd have approved."

And sometimes, the naming process can lead to some funny stories. Beverly told us, "My mother had a wicked sense of humour. She used to name pups we bred after my brother's posh girlfriends as they always had unusual names. But he was not very happy when a new one visited for the first time and heard mum shout 'Cordelia get off the sofa your feet are filthy'. That took some explaining. I told Jilly Cooper that story and she wrote it down and said she was going to work it into one of her books!"

What Should I Name My Girl Puppy?

Before you decide on a name, spend a little time getting to know your new puppy. You want to come up with a name that delights you, but also fits their personality.
If you want to go for something tried and true, pick from our most popular girl dog names list. If you don't want to always hear "that's my dog's name too," avoid the popular names. Choose from our unique female dog names list.
Here are some other factors to keep in mind as you weigh your options.

Getting Your Dog's Attention

The best names to get your dog's attention have hard consonants and use only one to two syllables. Longer names, with three to four syllables, are harder for dogs to distinguish. They're also less likely to attract their attention. Take this into consideration and it will help you once you start training your dog!

Confused Commands

Avoid names that sound like standard basic commands. Do not name your dog anything that sounds anything like “sit,” “heel,” “come,” or “no.” Otherwise, your dog can get confused. They could not understand if you're calling her name or issuing a command. Once again, this could make it very challenging to train your pup.
